Creating Year-Round Interest in a Native Garden

Learn about using California Natives for your garden. Even with summer-dormant plants you can have a garden that is inviting at any time of the year. With careful planning and planting, you can have year-round color and texture in your garden while conserving water and providing habitat for local birds and pollinators.

Presenter Master Gardener Delle Maxwell:  Delle is a Master Gardener representing San Mateo and San Francisco counties, serving since 2014. She has also been a volunteer for 16 years at the San Francisco Botanical Garden at Strybing Arboretum where she works in the nursery doing plant propagation, and serves as Board Chair for the San Francisco Botanical Garden Society.  Her personal interests in gardening are in drought-tolerant plants, especially California natives, cacti, and succulents. Her garden in Portola Valley has been on the Going Native Garden Tour many times.

North American natives, blueberries can be grown in the Bay Area. Not only is their fruit delicious, but the plants can also make attractive additions to your landscape.

Presenter Master Gardener Bill Michel:  Bill has been a UC Master Gardener since 2009, and has gone through many "plant obsessions" such as rose, fuschia, dahlia, bamboo, and tomato.  Retired from the computer industry, he has a BA in Biology from Pomona College.

A brief overview of sustainable practices for your garden to thrive, and be self-sustainable will also be discussed.

Drip Irrigation Made Easy

Easy to install and easy to maintain, emitter lines (also called drip lines) are a popular new type of drip irrigation.  In this class, we'll start with an overview of drip irrigation.  You'll learn how to convert your existing sprinkler or drip system to emitter lines.  We'll talk about how to schedule your drip irrigation for different types of plants; how long to run and how often.  Bring your questions about choosing, installing, maintaining and scheduling drip emitter lines.

Presenter Master Gardener Julie Montanari:  Julie is a landscape designer with a passion for water-wise landscapes.  Her naturalistic designs incorporate California natives and other low-water plants to create beautiful, healthy, waterwise gardens.  As a Master Gardener, she educates home gardeners about the beauty of low-water plants and the use of sustainable gardening practices.  She has a B.S. Degree in Mathematics from M.I.T. and spent 15 years in the financial services industry before beginning her career in horticulture.  She has a certificate in Environmental Horticulture from Foothill College, is a certified Master Gardener and a Bay Friendly Qualified Landscape Designer.

Growing Roses Organically in the Peninsula

Tips for growing roses organically for Peninsula residents will be discussed to include choosing material and style types, pruning techniques, when to prune, planting tips, rose care suggestions on how to fertilize organically, plus an overview of common rose diseases and how to best deal with them without the use of toxic chemicals. Presented by the UC Master Gardeners of San Mateo & San Francisco Counties.

Co-Presenter Master Gardener Patti Spezzaferro:  Patti has been gardening since she was a little girl in Canada, and has always been fascinated by roses. She holds a Bachelor's of Arts degree in Art History and was a graphic designer for ten years, has worked at Gamble Gardens as a summer intern, studied Environmental Horticulture at Foothill College, and tends to her own two hundred roses which include tree roses, rose bushes, and climbing rose vines.

Co-Presenter Master Gardener Stu Dalton:  Stu is a Master Gardener in San Mateo/San Francisco, with special interests in roses and orchids.  He has been a Menlo Park resident and avid gardener on the Peninsula for 39 years. He is a member of the Peninsula Orchid Society and has a 30+ year association with the Peninsula Rose Society (Past President and Consulting Rosarian for 25 years) and is a member of the American Rose Society.
