Join us for our annual screening of the film Symphony of the Soil.  Drawing from ancient knowledge and cutting edge science, Symphony of the Soil is an artistic exploration of the miraculous substance soil. By understanding the elaborate relationships and mutuality between soil, water, the atmosphere, plants, and animals, we come to appreciate the complex and dynamic nature of this precious resource. The film also examines our human relationship with soil, the use and misuse of soil in agriculture, deforestation and development, and the latest scientific research on soil’s key role in ameliorating the most challenging environmental issues of our time. Filmed on four continents, featuring esteemed scientists and working farmers and ranchers, Symphony of the Soil is an intriguing presentation that highlights possibilities of healthy soil creating healthy plants creating healthy humans living on a healthy planet.

Sudden Oak Life!

Saturday, October 13, 2018

10 AM - 12 PM

Image result for california oak tree

Learn how to care for heritage oaks and other trees. For thousands of years, the Native California people tended the oak forests essential to their quality of life. By revisiting their practices, we have an effective means of improving the health of trees, without the use of synthetic chemicals. Trees and soils are undergoing an ecological shift brought on by changes in land management, and are in decline in many parts of California.  Dr. Lee Klinger, an ecological consultant from Big Sur, with over 25 years of experience in forest ecology and soil science, will present a suite of techniques to restore oak trees.

Dr. Klinger has over 50 peer-reviewed publications in the fields of ecology, botany, atmospheric chemistry, geology, geophysiology, and complexity; and has held scholarly appointments at the National Center for Atmospheric Research, the University of Colorado, the University of Oxford, and the Chinese Academy of Sciences.

Backyard Chicken Basics

Saturday, Sept 15th, 2018

10:00 AM - 12:00 PM

Image result for chickens

Are you thinking about raising chickens in your backyard? This presentation will cover the basics of setting up your own backyard flock, including local ordinances, coop designs, feed and watering options, egg production, safety and health and resources for learning more.

Co-presenter Master Gardener Sharon Winnike:  Sharon became a Master Gardener volunteer in 2010. Her interest in composting and healthy soils and growing edibles led her to discover the fun and benefits of raising backyard chickens aka “pets with benefits.” She has been maintaining her flock for four years and enjoys sharing tips with other homeowners interested in raising their own small flock. Prior to becoming a Master Gardener volunteer, Sharon practiced law in Palo Alto and raised a healthy flock of four young men. Perhaps an empty nest motivated her to start a backyard flock. Happily, the” girls” require far less effort and expense.

Co-presenter Master Gardener Cindy Burgdorf:  Cindy has been a Master Gardener for 10 years.  She has been gardening for 62 years starting with cherry tomatoes in her grandmother’s garden.  On her 1 ½ acre property she has year-round vegetable gardens, gardens devoted to bees and butterflies, three beehives, six chickens, a worm bin and six compost bins. Her yard is a Monarch Waystation (Monarch Watch), a certified Butterfly Garden (NABA), certified WildLife Habitat (NWF), and certified Bee Friendly Garden (Pollinator Partnership).  Cindy has been keeping chickens (and keeping her family and friends in eggs) for 10 years.  She is now on her third flock and has raised all her “ladies” from day-old chicks.

All About Herbs and Edible Flowers

Saturday, June 16th, 2018

10:00 AM - 12:00 PM

Image result for edible flowers

Learn the basics of growing, harvesting and using culinary herbs and edible flowers. Propagate your plants from seeds, cuttings, transplants and divisions. Integrate your herbs and edible flowers in your native landscapes, vegetable gardens and containers. Maintain your plants with sustainable methods, and harvest your herbs to use them fresh or preserve them for future use. Have fun while sharing the many ideas for using herbs. Presented by Kathy Fleming and Cindi Morris of the Master Gardeners of San Mateo and San Francisco Counties.

Presenter Master Gardener Kathy Fleming:  Kathy loves creating a balance at her Peninsula home by growing culinary herbs and flowers in containers and her perennial landscape for more than 30 years.  She uses the herbs and edible flowers in many recipes, either fresh and/or dried, and loves sharing them with her friends and neighbors.  Kathy has been a San Mateo/San Francisco UCCE Master Gardener since 2006 and has always enjoyed speaking and sharing ideas about this passion.

Co-presenter Master Gardener Cindi Morris:  Cindi’s affair with plants began when she was in the fourth grade. She used to visit Ferry Morse Seed Company where her father worked.  She loved peaking into the labs and seeing all of the experiments, and the best part was picking out some seed packets to take home to grow.  Cindi was always amazed that you could plant a small seed and it would grow into a wonderful flower.  Over the years Cindi has continued her interest in growing plants, and today as a Master Gardener she loves assisting the home gardener with their gardens.

Organic Cannabis Cultivation for Small Commercial and Home Growers

Saturday, March 31st, 2018

10 AM -12 PM

Colum Riley and Randy Ritchie, the founders of Malibu Compost will be giving an informative and fun presentation on organic cannabis cultivation for the small commercial producers and home growers. This clinic is geared towards those who grow directly in the soil and wants a clear picture of what organic growing is and what the principles and protocols of a true organic grow actually are. The class will start from ground up with soil mixing, top-dressing and compost tea regimens for germination to seedling through the vegetative and flowering stages of growth. How to organically tackle pest issues and diseases during the grow cycle will also be discussed. If you are curious about what the word “organic” actually means when it comes to growing cannabis and which organic products are truly organic and why growing organic matters to your health and well-being, as well as the health and well-being of our planet, then this class is for you!

Soil is alive! Come to learn and see the difference between dirt and soil. Soil compaction and over watering are two of the most common challenges for a successful garden.  Learn about the very important jobs soil microbes perform and how they partner with plants. Learn simple ways to invite them into your garden at home and at work and why you want them to take the lead in caring for your plants. Presented by Theresa Lyngso.

Theresa grew up in Belmont when it was full of oak trees and small creeks and spent much of her childhood outside exploring nature.  In 2002 she became a Master Composter and in 2009 she became a Master Gardener.  She gardens in Loma Mar with her husband Joe, they grow mainly natives, apples and pears and some vegetables using as little water as possible.  She is President and CFO of Lyngso Garden Materials.

Explore the many benefits of healthy soil in this exciting talk. Healthy soil not only conserves water and protects our water systems but it stores carbon leading to increased soil microbial communities, healthy and abundant food systems, and a more resilient climate. According to soil experts, restoring soil health through regenerative farming practices (i.e., no-till, cover crops, compost) and regenerative ranching practices (i.e., holistic grazing) has the potential to return carbon to the soil and lower atmospheric CO2 levels within decades. Presented by Anne Stauffer of the Sierra Club.

Anne Stauffer grew up in city of Bakersfield, surrounded by farmland, cotton fields, warm desert air, and the Kit fox. Like many of us, she has witnessed the loss of open space—buildings and homes have replaced many of the open fields and the beloved Kit fox is an endangered species. After moving to the Bay Area, she became an environmental activist and currently serves as co-organizer of the Soils Committee within the Loma Prieta Chapter of Sierra Club. Anne believes that an increased awareness of our natural world will lead to protection of these vital ecosystems, including the abundant life within soil, and ultimately to reduced CO2 levels in Earth’s atmosphere and a stabilized climate.

Our Ocean and Climate Change

Dr. Heller will talk about a biogeochemical cycle, driven by ocean bacteria, that sustains life on Earth by keeping the atmosphere in balance. The most important piece of this cycle is nitrogen fixation - the same process that makes soil rich. You'll learn how tiny molecules in tiny creatures (DNA in bacteria) influence and respond to planet-size processes like atmospheric balance and climate change.

Philip Heller is a native San Franciscan and a lifetime resident of the Bay Area. He received his Bachelor of Science degree from U.C. Berkeley in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science. He worked for many years as a software engineer in Silicon Valley, eventually becoming a consultant, author, and public speaker. He is the author of 4 books on the Java programming language.

Phil’s midlife crisis was the realization that whether you write software or prose, it matters what you write about. At the age of 50-something he enrolled at San Jose State University and got his Master’s Degree 2 years later, in Computer Science with a Bioinformatics emphasis. He moved on to get his PhD in Bioinformatics from U.C. Santa Cruz, graduating in 2014. His did his research in Jon Zehr’s Microbial Oceanography lab, studying nitrogen fixation. His postdoctoral work for the Smithsonian Institution took him to the Moss Landing Marine Laboratories, where he used Bioinformatics to study species invasion in Monterey Bay. In 2016 he was appointed Assistant Professor at San Jose State University, where he teaches programming and Bioinformatics, and continues his research into marine organisms that give life to all beings on the planet.

Presenter Master Gardener Janice Moody:  Janice at one time maintained 6 acres in Pescadero, primarily by herself, which included gopher and deer abatement.  With the help of about a dozen Cinch traps, she boasts the trapping of over 400 gophers in a 3-month period.  She loves to share her tricks of the trade with her fellow gardeners who might view this as a daunting task.

2018 Thinking with Your Hands: Circular Seat Enclosure

Our famous Thinking with Your Hands workshop is back once again! Mark your calendars for our upcoming workshop dates: Saturday, February 10th and Sunday, February 11th of 2018

It’s not as easy as people may think to build a proper dry-stone wall, one that looks good and will stay up for a lifetime! It’s worth learning how to stack stones properly to be able to make beautiful permanent landscape features like walls and arches. Besides, it’s way more fun than having someone else do it for you! Students wishing to learn about dry laid construction with real stones are encouraged to attend John Shaw-Rimmington’s workshop.

John Shaw-Rimmington is a professional “waller” and a landscape design consultant. John has instructed courses in walling and created stunning art and impres-sive installations – garden features including arches and follies, such as ha-has and faux ruins from California and British Columbia to Vermont and Newfoundland. He also writes a lively daily instructional blog in ‘walls without mortar’ called Thinking with My Hands. He recently published a new book called How to Build Dry-Stacked Stone Walls, available at LYNGSØ and on Amazon.com

In this year’s workshop John plans to teach how to build an unusual dry laid circular seat enclosure using local stone provided by Lyngso. Within the bench, there will be small arch openings for each of the students to build. This workshop is essentially a beginner course but with the opportunity to get creative once the student becomes familiar with the three basic principles of dry stone wall construction: batter, hearting and bonding.

Students should come prepared for one hour of indoor class time both days as well as 6 hours of hands on professional instruction working with various kinds of stone. Wear proper clothing and bring safety glasses. Lunches are provided.

Saturday February 10, 2018 - 09:00 AM to 04:00:PM (and)

Sunday February 11, 2018 - 09:00:AM to 04:00:PM

COST: $390.00

WORKSHOP FEE IS NONREFUNDABLE.

Saturday, February 3th, 2018

10 AM - 12 PM

Did you know that camellias have been grown in Asia since 2700 BC? However, Bay Area is perfect for planting camellias in your landscape. Camellias are easy to grow and are a wonderful addition to your garden. Besides showing beautiful blooms in the garden, camellias make great cut flowers indoors. Join us for a talk on the history, culture, care, and the beauty of camellias. Discussion will include various types of camellia plants and flower forms. Pruning and re-potting of camellias will be demonstrated.

Presented by Meg Milani and Gene Fleet of the San Francisco Peninsula Camellia Society.
